Zielona Gora literally means "Green Mountain" in Polish, and
the name reflects its character, being built on a series of forested hills. It
is a very neat town, full of green areas and there are a great many monuments to
be found. The Grape Gathering Festival takes place every September renewing the
city's traditions as a flourishing wine growing and wine producing region.
The city has a unique atmosphere and its many visitors are immediately
captivated by its charm. Stroll around the picturesque old town and visit the
19th century wine houses. The Palm House, situated on one of the highest
positions in the town, was built by an industrialist
August Cempler.
In 1956 a glass pavilion was added to accomodate over 200 species of plants and
palms and later a restaurant was opened. The Palm House is one of the most
distinctive buildings of the city - the only one of its kind.
The beautiful old churches are well worth a visit with the St Jadwiga Cathedral
being the oldest monument in Zielona Gora. Built in the 13th century it has been
reconstructed over the years.
The Hunger Tower, formerly known as the Bath Tower, used to be part of one of
the town's entrance gates. The tower and nearby timber market are linked with
the history of "Witch Trials" that took place here in the 16th century.
Nowadays Zielona Gora is a hub of education, culture and industry. |
