The charming town of Wolsztyn (population 14,800) was once a
well known centre of woollen cloth production. Today it is a popular holiday
spot with not only Polish tourists but with visitors from Germany, Holland and
even further afield. The town is situated amongst lakes and on the rivers Obra &
Dojca and was first mentioned in 1424 when it was already a town. After a great
fire in 1810 Wolsztyn had to be practically rebuilt.
The many attractions of the town include: a 19th century
palace, now converted into a hotel, a recreation and water sports centre on Lake
Wolsztyn, the exquisitely decorated 18th century Baroque church, the local
regional museum and the second world war Russian cemetary.
Fans of boating and canoeing will delight in the attractive
River Obra which interconnects a number of the local lakes. Likewise anyone
interested in railways will love the open-air steam locomotive museum, with the
last mainline regular steam locomotive services in Europe operating from the
town.
Wolsztyn has many and varied shops, delicatesans, patiseries,
shops and small supermarkets. The cafes and restaurants have friendly staff
serving drinks and delicious local cuisine. Everything is within walking
distance but bicycles can be hired locally by the more adventurous explorer.
